Apocalyptic and futuristic dramas have always seemed to be my perfect cup of tea. It reminds us how at any time, the world as we know it can come to an end or can suddenly erupt into deadly chaos. It’s a terrible thing to think about, but we need to face it: it will happen one day.
‘Pacific Rim’ is a perfect example of showcasing severe, out-of-this-world terror that can lead to human extinction. ‘Pacific Rim’ is about a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures called Kaiju. When all of a sudden giant Kaijus’ start rising from the sea and consume millions of lives and resources and leaves destruction and commotion in its paths. To combat Kaiju’s, humankind devise a special type of massive fighting robots called Jaegers which is operated by two pilots with identical minds (i.e. twins, mother and daughter, father and son etc…) which are locked in a neural bridge. They go through intense training.
This film included a multi-cultural, artistic cast including: Idris Elba (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), Charlie Day (The Lego Movie), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Diego Klattenhoff (Mean Girls), Charlie Hunnam (Deadfall), Max Martini (Saving Private Ryan) and even more!
This is a film was an accomplishment for its special effects and was nominated for a BAFTA Film award for ‘Best Special Visual Effects’ along with another 33 nominations and 12 wins which include: Hollywood Film Award and a Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award.
What I really loved about this film was is its unique plot and how scientific it was; I believe that it was very realistic. Its explanation for how Kaiju’s were formed is logical and sensible. The film stated that during the Mesozoic Era, their Ancestors attempted to colonize the Earth as Dinosaurs, but the environment proved to be uninhabitable for them and prevented them from remaining on the planet for long, so became extinct. They spent their time adapting and evolving under the earth’s crust until the Earth's environment was ready for their colonization. They are able to live on radioactive waste and pollution, the earth’s core is full of all that which makes it a perfect place for them to develop.
Each character was well thought through. In my eyes, Mako (portrayed by Rinko Kikuchi) was my favourite character as she represented female power and showed that girls can do as much as guys can do and sometimes, even better!
This film is an absolute must-see for ‘Godzilla’ fans as ‘Godzilla’ 2013 has a very similar plot to ‘Pacific Rim’.
I would give this film 9/10 due to its special effects, plot and casting. I can’t wait for ‘Pacific Rim 2’ which will be released in 2017 and is in development at the moment!
